Snoh Aalegra: Music For The Soul
By Karen Zheng
There is something truly special about an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. They possess a certain kind of authenticity and raw intimacy that is inimitable. In an age of overproduction and digital manipulation, it is refreshing to hear such stripped-down versions of music being celebrated.
On February 18th 2020, R&B singer Snoh Aalegra gave a remarkable live performance at the NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C. Devoid of any excessive audio effects, Aalegra’s velvety smooth vocals take centre stage as she performs some of her most well-known hits like “I Want You Around” and “Whoa.”
During this set, Aalegra’s intricate vocals and delicate intonations meld seamlessly with the backup singers and instrumentalists to produce a sophisticated and soul-stirring acoustic experience. Not to mention the fact that NPR’s immaculate sound quality further guarantees a sublime auditory event.
Her rendition of “Love Like That” which opens the show is especially moving and poignant. Music has a unique sort of healing power and this song perfectly exemplifies that. You can’t help but smile as you listen to it.
The selection of songs that are pulled from Aalegra’s oeuvre are thoughtfully curated and delightfully diverse, as we get some slower melodies as well as some more upbeat tracks. Thus, we are taken through a whirlwind of emotions as the concert progresses.
Visually, Snoh’s look also perfectly encapsulates the essence of her sound. With a sleek ponytail, two small gems placed on either side of her eyes, baggy jeans, and a plain white hoodie embellished with a crystal fringe detailing, she is the epitome of effortless cool. Understated, yet impactful.
May this be a sign to check out some of the other songs in Snoh’s discography as well.
